We started playing role-playing games together in the early 90's. At the time, Clay worked for a game distributor, and frequently brought home new games for the group to check out. When Clay brought Hans im Glück's 1835, it was the start of a new obsession. We have been playing games from the 18xx series ever since.

After designing our first complete game, 1865: Midwest, we had a bit of a problem. We had designed our vision of the perfect 18xx game, with all of our favorite features. But it was so Epic, and complex, that the two of us were the only people who were crazy enough to play it. So we came up with a new plan.

Our new design, 18EZ, would be designed as the definitive introductory 18xx game. We devised a list of objectives for the game:

  • It would accommodate up to six players, and each would have an equal chance of winning based on their decisions.

  • It would be broken down into multiple levels, so that players didn't need to learn the entire game, all at once.

  • The first level would be able to be played in about an hour.
